Farflung
Five prompts, one pin each. Every prompt has several right countries, and the fewer players who think of yours, the further it carries you.
What is Farflung?
Farflung is a free daily geography game. Every day brings one expedition of five prompts, asking for things like a landlocked country in South America or a country whose flag has orange in it. Each prompt has many right answers, and you drop one pin on the world map for each. The twist is that obvious answers don't get you far: the fewer players who think of your country, the more kilometres it adds to your expedition. People sometimes search for it as far flung, the far flung game or the far flung geography game; it's all the same daily map game.
How to play
- Press Start expedition. The first prompt appears with a 60-second clock.
- Tap a country on the map, or search for it by name. Tap it again or press Drop pin to lock it in.
- See how far that pin carried you, then move on to the next prompt.
- After five pins you make camp, where every right answer is revealed with how many players picked it.
A new expedition starts at midnight in your time zone. Read the full guide.
How scoring works
Every right answer falls into one of five rarity tiers, from Common to Farflung, worth 40 to 100 km. A wrong country or an empty pin is a Miss and adds nothing. The best possible expedition is 500 km.
| Tier | Distance | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 40 km | The answer most people reach for first. |
| Uncommon | 55 km | A step off the main road. |
| Rare | 70 km | Only a few players pinned this one. |
| Elusive | 85 km | Almost nobody thought of it. |
| Farflung | 100 km | The rarest kind of right answer. As far as a pin can go. |
| Miss | 0 km | That country isn't a right answer for this prompt. |
More on how rarity is measured.
Tips for finding rare answers
- Skip the first country that comes to mind; most players will pin it too.
- Look at small countries and island nations. Microstates such as San Marino or Tuvalu are often right and rarely chosen.
- Remember overseas territories. France reaches South America through French Guiana, and Denmark reaches North America through Greenland.
- Use the search box for countries that are hard to tap on a phone.
Farflung Unlimited
Want more than one expedition a day? Farflung Unlimited deals fresh runs of five prompts as often as you like, with or without the clock. It never uses upcoming daily prompts and never touches your streak.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a right answer?
Any country that fits the prompt. Each prompt has between 8 and 60 right answers, built from published country data. Overseas territories count for the country that governs them, so a pin on Greenland is a pin on Denmark.
How is rarity measured?
By how many players chose the same country. Before many people have played a prompt, the starting estimate comes from how often each country's Wikipedia article is read; as pins come in, real choices take over.
When does a new expedition start?
At midnight where you are. Everyone gets the same five prompts for the same date, whatever their time zone.
Why did my distance go up after I finished?
When a day has ended in every time zone, Farflung makes a final count of every pin. If your answer turned out rarer than it looked while you played, you get the extra distance. A final count never lowers a score.
Can I play an expedition I missed?
Yes. Any of the previous seven days can be played from the camp screen. Late expeditions are scored the same way but don't extend your streak.
